Beautiful monster -Lakormis

“Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it”, said Confucius. And beauty is a relative concept, most would say. Because it is dependent on the person who is appreciating it – on his taste and appreciation of what is beautiful – which differs from one person to another.

Thus, they say, beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. But what if the beholder cannot distinguish the beauty from the beast, just because they seem to be once? Beautiful monsters. That’s what Lakormis’art is all about. Beauty and its opposite, that blend together shaping into faces and freckles. And we don’t know if we want to kiss them or simply runa way hiding in our closet.

Turkish artist Merve Morkoç aka Lakormis mocks our predilection for beauty. For the thin, young, model-like characters that lies in fashion magazines. But Morkoç alters the women’s appearances with disturbing, fantasy disfigurations. Turn them into beautiful monsters. And the initial, instinctive attraction quickly becomes repulsion.

But then, into desire again. Because after all, we can still see beauty lying underneath. And so our mind switches from feeling to feeling. Into a swirl of “I thought I knew what beauty is”. But now, I don’t anymore.
